The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina's (UFSC) main campus is located in Florianópolis, capital of Santa Catarina state. Founded on December 18, 1960, with the goal of promoting teaching, research and extension, UFSC is a free and public university, valued as the fifth best in Brazil, the sixth in Latin American and the 205 in the world, according to the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, 2013. Currently, UFSC has over 35.000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs; distance, technical, elementary and infant education; and high school. It also has about 3.000 administrative staff and more than 2.000 faculty members, the vast majority of them with doctoral degrees.
